For years the brand has remained an icon in the watchmaking realm for all things exquisite and has presented some of the best timepieces. Particularly well-known for their coveted Dress watches and artful designs, JLC manufactures fascinating luxury watches combining intricate components, sophisticated designs and notable patents. The brand is also renowned for its technical innovations, including inventing the world’s smallest mechanical movement, the Calibre 101.
In 1833, Antoine LeCoultre, who founded Jaeger-LeCoultre, set up a watchmaking workshop in a town called Le Sentier. He invented the machine that could cut watch pinions out of steel. This humble beginning marked the stepping stone for his revolutionary contribution to the luxury watch industry. Years later, Antoine’s son, Elie, demonstrated the same desire for horological perfection and expanded his father’s workshop to include manufacturing in-house.
However, in 1903 when Antoine’s grandson took over the business, the brand achieved an impressive feat. He began working with Edmond Jaeger, a watchmaker from France. Jaeger created complications that could measure speed. During that time, he challenged the various Swiss watchmakers to produce an ultra-thin movement. This is when Jacques-David LeCoultre, Antoine’s grandson, took up the challenge and created the world’s thinnest pocket watch. Following this, the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand was born in 1937.
