Rolex is a pioneer in creating timeless watches, and the ‘Air-King’ is a special collection created during the 1930s to tribute the pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain. While Rolex designed several versions for the pilots, like the Air-Lion, Air-Tiger, and Air-Giant, only the Air-King continued to lament its position. The first Air-King surfaced in 1945 and quickly captivated the attention with its 34mm large stainless steel case and simple time-only dial. Their elegance was well honoured outside the aviation industry and soon became a coveted Rolex model.
Looking at the watch, you can easily understand that Rolex sincerely made it for the pilots to help them in navigational time readings. The dial face of the 34mm models had 3/6/9 prominent hour markers for easier reading. In the 1960s, bi-colour variants of yellow gold and stainless steel with a smooth bezel and tritium luminescence appeared. In 1992, Rolex released two more steel models with two different bezel options.
Over the years, nothing significant has changed in the design of the Air-King series. The new-age collectors are more familiar with the Rolex Air-King in its new design, but the traditional design garners more popularity. At The Luxury Hut, you’ll get plenty of pre-owned Air-King options, including vintage and rare models.

The 1930s was the golden age when humans made impressive progress in aviation and even introduced long-distance flights. The Air-King pays homage to the explorer of the skies and celebrates the achievements made during that period in aviation.
Rolex launched the early Air-King models in the 1930s with variants like the Air-Lion, Air-Giant & Air-Tiger. However, it dropped all of them in the 1940s. In 1945, during World War II, Rolex created the Air-King series to honour army pilots. The first official Rolex Air-King model came out with the reference 4925 with a creamy white dial, Arabic numerals and a hand-wound movement.
The watches were large (34mm), offering a great readability to the pilots during flights. It was the first watch to sport the engine-turned bezel and feature a waterproof case offering a resistance of up to 100 meters.
In 1957, Rolex produced the longest-running Air-King with ref. 5500 (stayed for 37 years) sporting the first in-house Rolex movement, a solid steel case and bracelet, an acrylic protective crystal, and water resistance of up to 100 meters.
However, it wasn’t until 2007 that Rolex gave its one of the oldest series a complete transformation. The 2007 Air-King models came with a 40mm case, a 60-second dial with 3/6/9 numerals, and movement Calibre 3131. The watches were an exceptional illustration of the brand’s ability to curate a simple look with utmost precision.
The first Rolex Air-King with Ref. 4925 is a rare find and is considered one of the most sought-after in today’s watch market. The watch had a creamy dial, even-numbered Arabic numerals, and housed a manual-wind movement.
Air-King is one of the oldest and most popular Rolex creations that pay tribute to the age of aviation in the 1930s. It has an easily identifiable design and is purpose-built to help fliers during long-distance flights. While the vintage variants hold a special place in the collector’s heart, other references embrace similar acknowledgements.
