Since its release in 1926, the Oyster Perpetual has been an integral part of Rolex’s wide catalogue. The watches feature a timeless design and are admired by all for their minimal yet significant elements. This is a major reason why the watches look fresh and young past 90 years. The Oyster Perpetual’s affordability makes it perfect for beginners and is equally popular among men and women.
With different case sizes (26, 28, 31, 34, 39, and 41mm), the watches come with candy-coloured dials without any date, diamonds or other decorations. The Oyster Perpetual watches exhibit all the essential features, including a waterproof Oyster case, excellent chronometric accuracy, a self-winding movement, and featuring the hours, minutes, and seconds. These are chronometer timepieces in their purest form.

Often referred to as the ‘one and only’, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual holds exclusive merit, i.e., you could wear the watch on every occasion. Enclosing the essence of the Oyster and an unmatched technical prowess, the Oyster Perpetual is a little masterpiece that helped Rolex establish its reputation.

The Rolex Oyster is the world’s first waterproof watch, released in 1926. Two years later, in 1931, Rolex expanded the series with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, the first waterproof automatic watch. Until then, the wearer had to wind the timepiece manually, but now the new movement could wind itself using the hammer automatic.
The Oyster Perpetual was one of Rolex’s biggest achievements which other watch manufacturers soon adapted. Since its debut, the OP watch’s design has remained unchanged; only the material has been refined over the years, making the watches even more robust and stable.
All the watches in the Rolex Oyster Perpetual range are made of 904L stainless steel to withstand corrosion or any other scratch or damage. This makes it the perfect wrist piece to wear in almost any situation. Rolex uses the same material for the bracelet, which sits comfortably on the wrist, exuding a classic aesthetic.
Putting another feather of excellence to the cap, Wilsdorf wanted the Oyster Perpetual to go beyond the traditional Swiss watch manufacturing style and to offer the collectors something more desirable. He understood that pulling the crown out daily to wind the movement would compromise the timepiece’s water resistance and, hence, launched the new Oyster Perpetual automatic winding rotor mechanism.
The new automatic movement winds the timepiece automatically and doesn’t require the wearer to unscrew the crown every other day. This ingenious system fetched Rolex’s iconic watch brand status in the 20th century.
You could often find the term ‘Oyster Perpetual’ associated with many other Rolex models like the Daytona, Submariner, GMT-Master, and others. In Rolex, ‘Oyster’ refers to the technical part where the case back screws down for improved water resistance, and the term ‘Perpetual’ refers to the fact that the movement is self-winding.
Therefore, all Rolex watches virtually follow the technical structure of the Oyster Perpetual, making almost all the modern Rolex timepieces part of the OP range.
Forever testing the functionality and accuracy of their watches under extreme conditions, Rolex sent a pair of OP timepieces to the peak of Mount Everest in 1953. When Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Mt. Everest, they were carrying Rolex OP watches. The direct feedback from real-time conditions generated trust for the watches.
In 1926, Rolex created the first Oyster Perpetual wristwatch featuring a hermetically sealed case providing optimal protection to the movement. The watch was missing the trademark Rolex crown logo then, and the fluted bezel, case back and crown were all screwed down to protect the dial and the movement.
Rolex proved the reliability of the first water-resistant timepiece by attaching it to the wrist of swimmer Mercedes Gleitze. She wore one of the earliest Rolex Oyster watches while attempting to swim across the English Channel. After 10 hours of swim, the watch was still dry inside.
