Rolex is unrivalled when it comes to creating watches with a purpose. The ‘Milgauss’ is a purposeful watch built by the Swiss Maison for scientists, engineers or anyone who worked in the presence of strong magnetic fields in the 1950s. The most significant element was the special orange lightning bolt second-hand, still featured on the current models. In the 1920s, watchmakers struggled to create a watch that could withstand magnetic fields as even 50-100 gauss influence hampered the movement’s accuracy. Rolex came up with a convincing solution: The ‘Milgauss’. In 1954, Rolex dropped the first-ever Milgauss model with Ref. 6543, which was more of a prototype with only 150 pieces produced over two years. However, it was in 1956 when the Milgauss made its official entry into the Rolex lineup with Ref. 6541.
The watch embodies a versatile and fun design that makes it easily recognisable. One could easily mistake the early Milgauss models for a Submariner because of the black dial, rotating bezel, and Oyster bracelet. But the models were an easy stand apart thanks to the honeycomb dial, alpha hands, dots & arrows, hour markers, and the bright red Milgauss name.

Rolex released the first Milgauss model in 1956 with reference 6541, which was in production till 1960.
