Born to celebrate Everest climbing in 1953, the Explorer was a major turn for Rolex and shaped the sports segment of the watch brand in an alluring way. On May 29th, 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. While Norgay wore his Rolex Datejust to the peak, there’s still a debate on Hillary’s Oyster Perpetual model reaching the summit. However, Rolex didn’t miss the opportunity to triumph its win and soon launched the official Explorer collection with the name ‘EXPLORER’ on the dial in late 1953. Rolex was already testing watches that could provide a perfect time at 70% less oxygen and -50°F, and the Everest climb proved to be the perfect marketing scope.
The Rolex Explorer Ref. 6350 was released in 1953 and was the first reference to wear the moniker ‘EXPLORER’ on the dial. The watches had the typical explorer 3-6-9 black dial, large hour markers, and Mercedes hands. There were some references with pencil hands and syringe minute hands. At 36mm, it was a tool watch that could accurately tell the time in the most challenging conditions.
