    History of Rolex Submariner 14060

In the early 1980s, Rolex focused on evolving the Submariner Date. Even though it continued to produce the Ref. 5513, a model that started life in 1962, it was superseded by the Submariner 14060 in 1990. That’s why the 14060 resembles the outgoing 5513 in design, often considered a bridge between the old and the new.

The Ref. 14060 was the first no-date Submariner model and also the first Submariner to be made of 904L stainless steel. It has unidirectional black aluminium diving bezel, traditional lugs, and lug holes. The updates included a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, replacing the acrylic, and a Triplock crown that increased water resistance to 300m from the previous 200m offered by the Submariner 5513. Inside, the Calibre 1520 was upgraded to the Calibre 3000, a more modern movement.

Borrowing another feature from its 5513 predecessor, the 14060 Submariner had a ‘two-liner’ dial and doesn’t include the ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ mark that comes from passing the COSC Testing. This ensures the black dial is much cleaner with just two lines of text above the 6 o’clock position.

With a production run from 1990 to 1998, the early models of the Submariner 14060 maintained vintage charm with black Tritium-filled "Swiss-T<25" dials, while later models transitioned to LumiNova, noted by “Swiss” only, followed by "Swiss Made" in 1999/2000.

In 1999, Role replaced the Ref. 14060 with the revised 14060M (‘M’ = Modified), featuring an upgraded Calibre 3130 movement.

The Rolex 14060 is highly regarded by collectors as the last ‘classic’ Submariner, merging vintage aesthetics with modern reliability. It is highly preferred by enthusiasts who dislike the aesthetics of a date window and Cyclops magnifier above the date display.

Key Features of the Submariner 14060

The Rolex Submariner 14060 is an iconic reference, often called the ‘last of the best’ for its role in linking vintage and modern. In short, it is a league in its own.

Here are the key features of the Submariner 14060 that make it so enduring.

    • 904L Stainless Steel Case

The ref. 14060 is the first Submariner to be made of 904L stainless steel, which is corrosion-resistant, unlike the 316L steel previously used. The 40mm Oyster case is slim and traditional, and many models feature drilled lug holes. The black aluminium bezel is unidirectional with a 60-minute scale, and the acrylic crystal of older models is replaced by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Equipped with the Triplock screw-down crown system, the 14060 has a water resistance rating of 300m.

    • Black Dial with Tritium Lume

As a ‘No-Date’ Submariner, the 14060 has a clean, symmetrical black dial without a date window or ‘Cyclops’ magnifier. The early models used Tritium, later transitioning to Super-LumiNova (“Swiss Made” on the dial). It has white gold applied indices and classic Rolex Mercedes hands. Also, the ref. 14060 is a ‘two-liner’ and doesn’t include the text ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ on the dial, making it appear clean.

    • Movement

It is driven by the Calibre 3000 automatic movement, a robust, modern movement that uses a flat spring rather than a Breguet overcoil, offering greater reliability, stability, and shock resistance.

    • Oyster Bracelet

The Submariner 14060 is fitted with Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, featuring solid outer links and hollow middle links, giving it a lighter feel than modern solid-link bracelets. It has a stamped Oysterlock clasp with a diving extension.

What Makes The Rolex Submariner 14060 Special?

The Submariner 14060 was the final ‘neo-vintage’ No-Date Submariner, blending classic aesthetics with modern durability. It features a clean dial, an aluminium bezel, drilled lug holes for easy strap changes and a non-engraved rehaut, making it a favourite for its ‘old-school’ charm. Unlike modern ceramic bezels, the aluminium insert develops a unique patina and fades over time, which is highly prized by collectors.

One of the key reasons why the Rolex 14060 is special is the absence of the date window and Cyclops magnifier. While the date function is a helpful feature, many argue it harms the harmony and symmetry of the design. This makes the now-discontinued Submariner No-Date ref. 14060 so desirable.

As an immediate successor to the Ref. 5513, the 14060 pays tribute to older models with its aesthetics but is also refined to meet the demands of the modern market, with upgrades such as increased water resistance and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. It is a serious dive watch with 300m water resistance, an unidirectional bezel, and an improved movement (Calibre 3000).

In short, the 14060 is simple, functional and timeless, making it reliable for everyday wear and a favourite for those who appreciate subtle sophistication.

How to Authenticate the Rolex Submariner 14060?

As a popular Rolex Submariner model, the reference 14060 has many convincing counterfeits circulating in the market, making knowing how to spot a fake even more essential.

Here are the various ways to authenticate a Submariner 14060.

    • Inspect the Case

The 14060 is known for its lug holes, which make strap changes easier. Many fakes miss this feature. The reference and serial number should be engraved between the lugs at 6 and 12 o’clock. The engraving should be deep and not laser-etched. Plus, as a diving watch, the Submariner 14060 has a smooth, solid metal case back with no engravings.

    • Examine the Dial

The dial should have a “Two Line” text above the 6 o’clock. The lettering and font should be crisp and perfectly aligned. Additionally, the 14060 is a No-Date Submariner, so it should not have a date or a Cyclops lens. If you see a date window or magnifier, it’s fake.

    • Movement

The 14060 uses the robust Calibre 3000 automatic movement. The second hand must sweep seamlessly without any sound. A genuine movement is almost silent. Any audible ticking noise is a red flag.

    • Bracelet & Clasp

The watch should only come on a 93150 Oyster bracelet. Inside the clasp, there should be a code (number/letter) indicating the year of production. Genuine bracelets have weight, feel secure and are not overly stretchy.

    • Trusted Verification

Always buy a pre-owned Submariner 14060 from a trusted dealer who offers a warranty and guarantee. Consider checking the online reviews and asking questions before entering into any transaction. Also, if the price seems unusually low for a Submariner 14060, that’s a red flag, as the model commands a strong market value.

    • Check the Box & Papers

The pre-owned market offers the 14060 with/without the original box and papers. If it’s a “full set”, the watch will include the box, papers, tag, manuals, warranty card, booklets, service records, certificate, etc. Ensure the serial number on the document matches the number engraved on the watch case between the lugs at 6 o’clock. If choosing a watch without box/papers, make sure you buy from a reputable source only.

Investment Potential of the Submariner 14060

The Rolex Submariner 14060 is highly favoured by collectors for its ‘neo-vintage’ appeal. It is old enough to have a vintage charm and modern enough for daily wear, ensuring the best of both worlds. This attracts both collectors and first-time buyers. Moreover, there is a significant shift in the market towards pre-ceramic Rolex, adding to its desirability.

This popularity and desirability among collectors and enthusiasts ensure the Submariner 14060’s investment potential.

As a discontinued model, the 14060 has shown solid historical performance, with prices often increasing in the pre-owned market, especially for well-maintained models with box and papers. This makes it a popular entry point for collectors with the potential for future appreciation.
