    About the Rolex Root Beer

The Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer, or the Rolex Root Beer, is one of the most distinctive designs within the iconic GMT-Master series. Originally released in the 1970s, the “Root Beer” is defined by its unique two-tone brown-and-black bezel, offering a striking aesthetic that sets it apart. The name “Root Beer” draws its inspiration from the colour scheme of the famous American soft drink.

Rolex has been producing solid gold GMT-Master versions with brown dials and brown bezel inserts since the beginning of the collection in the 1950s, and these all-brown bezels are often referred to as ‘Root Beer’ bezels by some collectors.

However, the first Root Beer was the Ref. 1675/3, with a two-tone steel-and-yellow-gold case, a brown-and-gold aluminium bezel, and a matching brown dial (nipple dial). Modern interpretations of the Rolex Root Beer (Ref. 126711CHNR, Ref. 126715CHNR) continue the legacy of this Rolesor model, featuring a brown-and-black Cerachrom ceramic bezel.

Offering a distinct alternative to the red/blue ‘Pepsi’ or black/blue ‘Batman’, the GMT-Master Root Beer offers a more casual aesthetic. Beyond this, the model holds great potential for appreciation, making it an appealing prospect for collectors and investors alike. It remains highly sought-after for its unique colourway, blending functionality with a more sophisticated design.

Key Features of the Rolex Root Beer

The Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer is celebrated for its distinctive design. Combining the functionality of Rolex’s iconic travel watch with the warmth of gold, the Rolex Root Beer is a versatile timepiece with immense popularity and demand.

Here are its key defining features:

    • Two-Tone Bezel

The key defining characteristic of the Rolex Root Beer is its two-tone brown-and-black Cerachrom insert bezel. The bidirectional, rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel allows the wearer to easily track a second time zone. The earlier Root Beer models were equipped with brown and gold aluminium bezel inserts.

    • Rolesor Construction

Rolex produced the Root Beer in Everose Rolesor (combination of steel & Everose gold), Yellow Rolesor (combination of steel & yellow gold) or full Everose gold. This luxurious construction sets the watch apart from standard steel models.

    • GMT Functionality

As a part of the famous GMT-Master lineup, the Root Beer is designed for travellers and features an additional 24-hour hand which works in sync with the bezel to display the second time zone.  The local hour hand is adjusted independently, making it a practical timepiece for frequent flyers.

    Notable Rolex Root Beer Models

The Rolex Root Beer has evolved across generations, spanning both the GMT-Master and GMT-Master II collections. Each reference reflects a different design aura, ranging from vintage charm to modern luxury.

Below are some of the most notable Root Beer models released over the years:

    Ref. 1675/3

Around 1970, the Rolex Ref. 1675/3 was released as the first Rolesor GMT-Master, combining stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold. Often referred to as ‘Tiger Eye’, it had a brown and gold two-tone aluminium bezel and was paired with a sunburst brown dial, featuring distinct, raised gold-surround hour markers, affectionately known as “Nipple” dial by collectors. The 1675/3 had a shorter run and was always limited in numbers.

    Ref. 16753

Another vintage Root Beer reference released in the 1980s is the 16753 Root Beer, presented in a two-tone steel-and-yellow-gold case. It features a distinctive brown dial with gold ‘nipple’ hour markers and a gold/brown aluminium bezel. Often called the "Clint Eastwood" because he famously wore this specific reference, the model offers a quickset date, previously unavailable in 1675/3, adding to its functionality.

    16713

The first GMT-Master II ‘Root Beer’ appeared in 1989 with the reference 16713. Rolex adorned this new model with a shimmering, subtle sunburst dial, and it was also the first Root Beer to feature a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. As a ‘pre-ceramic’ model, it features a stainless steel and yellow construction, a warmer brown/gold aluminium bezel, and a brown dial. Known for its retro charm, the model is highly sought-after by collectors.

    126711CHNR & 126715CHNR

Launched around 2018, the GMT-Master II 126711CHNR (two-tone) and 126715CHNR (solid Everose gold) are modern iterations of the Root Beer, popular for their stunning black-and-brown Cerachrom ceramic bezels. Coming in either Everose Rolesor (126711CHNR) or full Everose gold (126715CHNR) construction, the watches merge modern technology with warm, vintage aesthetics to ensure an unmistakable wrist presence. Both models offer a balanced, everyday wearability, adding to their allure.

    Buying pre-owned Rolex Root Beer

Choosing a pre-owned Rolex Root Beer is one of the most convenient ways to own one of Rolex’s most recognisable sports watches. The pre-owned market offers access to a wide range of Root Beer references, including vintage, popular, modern, and discontinued variations that are no longer available at retail. It also gives you immediate access to this iconic design, bypassing the long waitlists at stores.

Apart from choice, you get greater pricing flexibility in the pre-owned market, where you can save more than buying brand-new. Plus, pre-owned Root Beer models are available in various ranges, depending on age, condition, material, reference, and ‘full-set’ status.

From an investment perspective, the GMT-Master Root Beer has consistently remained popular due to its unique design aesthetic, and so, when you buy a pre-owned model, it demonstrates notable value retention, serving as a solid investment without any hefty upfront cost.
