The Submariner links Rolex with the underwater world and embraces features that cater to the diver’s practical needs. In its 70 years long history, the Sub has undergone several improvements. Still, the watches always remain true to the original look, including an Oyster case with a matching steel bracelet, large indexes, a rotating bezel, and a distinctive dial. Since its launch, the Submariner has become a benchmark for diving watches and has surpassed all expectations.
During its release, the watch had a water resistance of 100 meters, which eventually went up to 200 meters and now 300 meters. Moreover, Rolex originally released the Sub with a 37mm case which switched to 40mm and then a 41mm case in 2020. These significant changes highlight Rolex’s technical ingenuity and design excellence and show how remarkable the Sub is as a diving tool.

Following the breakthrough release of the world’s first waterproof timepiece, the Oyster, in 1926, the release of the Submariner in 1953 marked another turning point in the brand’s history. It was an underwater survival tool that helped divers accurately measure how long they had been underwater. The Submariner took the watch world by storm with its unrivalled form and functionality and became a watch of choice to explore the deep.
Today, the Sub is available in various metals and sizes and looks beautiful in and out of the water.
When speaking of diver’s watches, one of the first names to strike your mind is the Rolex Submariner. Over the years, it has become more than a tool watch and hosts a spectrum of styles.
Along with those identities came a trail of nicknames, lovingly presented to the Sub models by the fans and collectors. Here are the interesting nicknames of the Sub:
Thanks to the perfectly balanced aesthetics of the Submariner, the watch has become quite a classic outside the diving world. Even though the Rolex icon has evolved aesthetically and technically, the features of a typical Sub remain the same. This is another reason why collectors adore it!
