Despite having a history that stretches back to 1847, Cartier watches remain at the forefront of the horology world with their luxurious and timeless appeal. At the beginning of the 20th century, King Edward VII rightly named Cartier ‘The king of jewellers and the Jeweller of kings’, which the brand has repeatedly proved right with its luminary timepieces. The Cartier watches have unconventional shapes, which grants them a special place within the luxury watch industry.
For a watch designer like Cartier, the Holy Grail is to create a timepiece that perfectly balances function and form. Whether the Ballon Bleu De Cartier or the Tank Anglaise, Santos De Cartier, or The Tank Must, each Cartier timepiece elegantly expresses an aesthetic that lasts generations.

Louis Francois Cartier took over his master’s workshop to establish Cartier in 1847. In 1874, Francois’ son Alfred took over Cartier and far stretched the company with his business acumen. However, Alfred’s sons Louis, Jacques, and Pierre were the ones to firmly cement Cartier’s name globally. Louis (oldest son) was responsible for curating some of the brand’s most significant designs, like the mystery clocks, Art Deco designs, etc.
In 1904, Louis Cartier’s Brazilian aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont complained about the impracticality of carrying pocket wristwatches while flying. To help his friend, Cartier designed a wristwatch that he could tie to the wrist. Named after Santos Dumont, the Cartier ‘Santos’ was the first men’s watch piece and had a distinctive square bezel.
What began as a luxury jewellery company soon extended its reach to the watch industry. Over the years, Cartier has delighted fans with gorgeous in-house timepieces showcasing their mechanical prowess and appealing aesthetics.
Louis Cartier produced the first Cartier model ‘Santos’ in 1904 for his Brazilian aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont. The latter had asked him to design a timepiece to keep his hands free while flying. The watch had a robust case, a bezel with exposed screws, and a highly legible dial with black Roman numerals. In 1906, Santos-Dumont became the first to wear a wristwatch while he flew 220 meters in 21.5 seconds (approx.). For seven years, Santos-Dumont was the only one to wear this model until 1911, when the Cartier Santos was made official for the first time.
In 1911, the Santos came out in various yellow gold and platinum models fitted to black or brown leather straps with a gold folding buckle.
Material: Stainless steel, Yellow gold, Two-tone (steel & gold), rose gold, white gold and platinum
Size: 23mm, 24mm, 29.5mm, 35.1mm, 36mm, 45mm, 46.6mm, etc.
Dial: Black, white, blue, silver, red, green, burgundy, etc.
Bezel: Fixed in various metal options, including diamond-set
Bracelet: Oyster, jubilee, leather strap
Cartier’s long-rooted history in the industry means they have designed plenty of watches for both men and women. So, rest assured that there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking to buy one of these prestigious timepieces, consider these top Cartier models:
When you think of the most elegant and timeless Cartier model, the ‘Tank’ is the first to come to your mind. Having the famous square/rectangular shape with a white dial, blue sword-shaped hands, and Roman numerals, the Tank impresses with its simplistic yet contemporary watch design.
The Panther is Cartier’s most prominent motif exuding femininity and fearlessness. This bold emblem was included in Cartier’s catalogue in 1983 in a jewellery watch known as the Panthere de Cartier. Both men and women love the characteristic charm of the Panthere timepieces featuring square shapes and dials with clean lines and iconic Roman numerals. You can find them in special diamond editions as well.
The collection that started Cartier’s journey towards success was the Santos. Louis Cartier’s friend Alberto Santos-Dumont requested him to create a modern wristwatch that he could wear while flying. The design of the Cartier Santos is easily distinguishable by a square case and bezel with exposed screws.
Enclosing a more contemporary, chic, and charming design is the Cartier Ballon Bleu which first came into existence in 2007. The Ballon Bleu stands out with its unique circular shape, which further encompasses a circle within a circle in the steel case. The watch embraces a bold design with apearl dial, Roman numerals, and a sapphire cabochon crown.
The Pasha de Cartier is the first luxury sports watch from the brand and had its origin in 1932 when the Pasha (Sultan) of Marrakech asked for a bespoke watch design. The watch is easily recognisable for its oversized round shape, prominent dial, and Arabic numerals that give a refreshing essence to the usual Roman markers. The Pasha de Cartier timepieces offer a more modern vibe and take centre stage with any outfit.
